Public Health

The department also offers courses leading to a Bachelors of Science in Public Health (BSPH). The Benedict College Public Health Major offers a solid foundation in General Education combined with the study of public health related issues with special emphasis on the African American population. This concentration is designed to prepare individuals for professional public health, health related well-ness, and fitness related occupations. As an added bonus, the BSPH degree also provides a solid foundation for continued graduate studies in Public Health.

The competencies for Public Health majors are to:

  1. monitor and diagnose the health concerns of entire communities with special attention given to the health concerns of African American communities;
  2. promote health practices and behaviors to assure that African American populations are aware of risk factors in their community;
  3. educate populations at risk on how to reduce diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, sexually transmitted diseases, stroke, teen pregnancy, mental health, substance abuse and violence;
  4. understand that public health focuses on entire populations instead of individual behaviors;
  5. evaluate the effectiveness of clinical and community-based interventions and wellness;
  6. understand efforts that address the physical, mental and environmental concerns of communities and populations with special emphasis on the African American community at risk for disease and injury.
