CHILD AND FAMILY DEVELOPMENT COURSES

CFD 110 Introduction to Child and Family Development Careers credit 1 hr.

Identification and exploration of careers related to children and families. Legal requirements forworking with children are discussed (e.g., background checks). NAEYC standards and professionalcode of ethics are also addressed.

CFD 230 Introduction to Early Childhood Education credit 3 hrs.

This course offers a complete and current overview of the historical and philosophical foundations,current issues, methods, and approaches to early childhood education.

CFD 330 Observation and Assessment of Young Children credit 3 hrs.

Practical and theoretical aspects of observing the behavior of young children are studied for the purpose of influencing curriculum and providing appropriate support. Characteristics, techniques, andcultural influences are examined. This course includes a ten-hour practicum.

CFD 331 Early Literacy and Language Development credit 3 hrs.

Major approaches and strategies for teaching early literacy to young children are examined. Listening,oral language, and beginning writing skills are emphasized. Twenty (20) hours of practicum experience are required.

CFD 332 Interpersonal Relationships credit 3 hrs.

This course provides an introduction to the field of interpersonal communication. Concepts related tothe development and maintenance of interpersonal relationships are addressed.

CFD 333 Marriage and Family Relationships credit 3 hrs.

Basic concepts, principles, theories, and issues of development and change in family relationships areexplored.

CFD 334 Parent Education and Guidance credit 3 hrs.

This course is designed to increase understanding of concepts and theories related to how parentsteach, guide, and influence children and adolescents. Prerequisites: CFD 333.

CFD 335 Health, Nutrition, and Safety for Young Children credit 3 hrs.

This course includes basic information on child health and safety issues. Attention is given to theessentials of a safe and healthy environment in the school. Students enrolled in this course will complete requirements for certification in infant and child first aid and CPR.

CFD 336 Curriculum and Program Planning credit 3 hrs.

This course investigates factors of program planning, principles of teaching and learning, and strategic design. It is designed to provide a theoretical and practical foundation for operating an early learning environment.

CFD 337 Family Dynamics credit 3 hrs.

This course focuses on the interaction among family members. Concepts include normal familystress, conflict management, and family stress and crises. Theories of family crisis and methods ofadapting are emphasized. Prerequisites: CFD 332 and CFD 333.

CFD 339 Family Resource Management credit 3 hrs.

This course addresses concepts related to the factors that influence the decisions individuals andfamilies make about developing and allocating resources such as time, money, material assets, energy, friends, neighbors, and space, to meet their goals.

CFD 433 Family Life Education Methods credit 3 hrs.

Focus on planning, developing, implementing, and evaluation of programs for families. Emphasis onunderstanding the general philosophy and principles of family life education. Prerequisites: CFD332, CFD 333, and CFD 339.

CFD 435 Childcare Administration credit 3 hrs.

Addresses issues, functions, and responsibilities involved in developing and implementing childcareprograms. Included are: types of programs, staffing, scheduling, environmental design, equipment,evaluation, financing, and licensure and regulations requirements. Twenty (20) hours of practicum experienced are required.

CFD 439 Family Law and Public Policy credit 3 hrs.

This course focuses on current laws and policies that affect children and families. Prerequisites: CFD 333, CFD 334, CFD 337, and CFD 339.

CFD 437 Professional Ethics credit 3 hrs.

This course focuses on the development of professional skills and increased understanding of theethical guidelines needed for working with children, families, and other professionals. Prerequisite:This course must be taken the semester before the final practicum (CFD 462).

CFD 450 Special Topics in Child and Family Studies credit 3 hrs.

The study of special topics in child and family studies. Prerequisite: Nine hours in Child and FamilyDevelopment and junior or senior standing, or consent of instructor. May be repeated for a maximum of six hours.

CFD 462 Child and Family Development Practicum credit 12 hrs.

This course is designed to give students practical site-base experience in settings serving childrenand families. Twelve (12) weeks of supervised experience are required. Also includes a seminar. Prerequisites: Completion of all major course requirements and a minimum 2.0 grade point average.

CFD/EDEC 440 Methods and Materials/Pre-School Curriculum/Practicum credit 4 hrs.

The course presents methods and materials of instruction appropriate for the pre-school level.Emphasis is placed on the growth, development, learning, and individual differences found among pre-school children. Twenty (20) hours of practicum experience required.

EDU 231 The Young Child/Practicum credit 3 hrs.

This course presents a study of the young child in family and society, including the effects of environmental, cultural, and socioeconomic influences. The focus is on observing and understanding thebehavior of children from birth to six years of age. Twenty (20) hours of practicum experiences are required.
