About the Title III Program
The Title III Program is an important funding source, which helps to strengthen the academic program, improve the library, and provide enhancement opportunities for faculty and student development. The Program further assists in increasing alumni participation rates, and cultivating corporate, foundation, and individual giving opportunities, and seeking additional governmental funding sources. The Service-Learning Program and the Center of Excellence are the primary entities designated to carry out the research and service foci. These programs are making a difference by reaching out into the community with student and faculty volunteers. Title III allocates funds to purchase computers and other information technology; this effort continues to improve the daily operations of the College.
A Brief History
Responding to the recognition of the contributions and special needs of historically black colleges and universities, the United States Congress enacted the Higher Education Act of 1965, PL99-498, to provide funds to strengthen HBCUs. The U.S. Department of Education was charged to carry out the mandates of the Higher Education Act, and Title III was established. Allocations have subsequently been made in five-year performance periods. Benedict College successfully applied for Title III funds in September of 1985. The first budget period began October 1, 1985, was a total allocation of $754,050.
The mission of the Title III Program is to assist the College with accomplishing its mission, vision and to achieve self-sufficiency. The goals and objectives of the Title III Program activities are in sync with the Strategic Directions and Goals of the College. Unit goals are primarily set to the extent that they may assist with achieving the established College goals.
