Sister Act was established as the sister organization to Brothers-In-Unity on the campus of Benedict College, Columbia, South Carolina. The organization began as a leadership component of the Service Learning Program, a unique feature of the institution established to permeate service, advocacy and administrative leadership among college students. The PLUS Program (Preparation for Leadership and Unity through Service) was a student leadership component designed to train middle school, high school, and college students to serve as Student Coordinators for outreach service and leadership projects.
As leaders for the outreach programs, each Coordinator was responsible for developing and implementing activities, as well as recruiting a team of students to carry out the goals of the designated projects. Sister Act was one of the original outreach programs established in 1996 as a student-led service-learning female outreach initiative designed to promote sisterhood among women. The mission was later expanded to address women issues.
