Columbia, SC -- June 12, 2012 -- Benedict College Fine Arts Department Theatre Ensemble under the direction of Mr. Charles David Brooks, III, Professor of Theater, has acquired the license to stage The Color Purple, The Musical about Love. The play, based on Alice Walker's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, was adapted for the screen in 1985 under the direction of Steven Spielberg through Warner Bros. /Amblin Entertainment.

Open Call for actors, actresses, and dancers to submit a bio and a photo starts July 9, 2012. Auditions will begin July 19-20 2012 from 9:00 a.m.to 3:00 p.m. in the Ponder Humanities and Fine Arts Center Theater, on the campus of Benedict College.

The world premiere of the on-stage musical was produced by the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta, Georgia in 2004, making its way to Broadway at the Broadway Theater by producers, Oprah Winfrey, Scott Sanders, Roy Furman and Quincy Jones. The music with the sounds and rhythms of blues, gospel, and jazz comes from the creative spirit of pop songwriters Brenda Russell, Allee Willis and Stephen Bray.
