SIAC Commissioner Greg Moore, Esq, presents the SIAC Men's All-Sports Award to Benedict College Director of Athletics Willie Washington.
ATLANTA -- Benedict College received the SIAC Commissioner's Men's All-Sports Award for the 2011-2012 sports season. This is the first time in school history that the Tigers have won the award.
"This is a tremendous accomplishment for Benedict College," said Willie Washington, Director of Athletics. "This award is a testament to the hard work and dedication by our coaching staff and student-athletes. Hopefully this is the first of many more."
Benedict scored a total of 31 points to capture this year's Commissioner's Cup, winning a conference title in basketball along with three second place finishes in cross country, track & field, and golf.
In second place was Morehouse College with a total of 28 points. The Maroon Tigers won conference titles in both cross country and track & field while finishing third in both tennis and golf, falling just short of their fifth consecutive all-sports award.
Finishing tied for third in the standing with 17 points each were Paine College and Stillman College. The Lions won a conference title in golf and finished second in baseball while the Tigers won the conference title in baseball and finished second in tennis.
SIAC Commissioner's Women's All-Sports Award went to Albany State with 24 points. Benedict finished in fourth place with 11 points. Benedict picked up seven points for a second-place finish in women's track and field and four point for a third-place finish in women's tennis.
The prestigious Commissioner's All-Sports Trophy is presented to the athletic department within the conference that has excelled in both men's and women's sports. A scoring system of 10 points for 1st place or conference titles, 7 points for 2nd place, and 4 points for 3rd place is used to determine the All-Sports Standings for the SIAC 13-member institutions. Football is based off the results of the championship game. The Men's & Women's Basketball tournament is not double elimination and does not offer a consolation game.
