Benedict College vigorously took part in the 2012 "Retool Your School" challenge sponsored by Home Depot's and won one of the $10,000 grants awarded to eleven of the competing Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Students, faculty, staff, alumni, friends, and community supporters took part in the voting process that would fund one of three projects declared at the beginning of the process.

Benedict College's Major Project was the completion of construction of the first ever baseball field in the history of the college. The Minor Project entailed plans to upgrade the campus Walking Track to increase campus green space and student fitness activities. The last project category was Campus Pride. Benedict College submitted its plan to renovate the seats in the Ponder Fine Arts Little Theater to increase community involvement.

Home Depot created the "Retool Your School" campus improvement grant program to help historic black colleges and universities make enduring improvements to their campus and facilities. In total, Home Depot will give away a total of $185,000 in grants. Thirteen grants will be awarded in 2012.

Kymm Hunter, Assistant Vice President for Communications and Marketing said, "Students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends went to Home Depot's 'Retool Your School' web site and started voting on the initial date, Feb. 14, and continued until April 10, the last day to cast a vote. We sent daily email blasts to all of our supporters to encourage them to vote for Benedict. We even had support from our local media who broadcast the challenge during the final weeks of the competition."

The winners were chosen by a combination of public voting and careful review by a distinguished panel of judges that included Dr. Lezli Baskerville, President, National Association for Equal Opportunity In Higher Education; Gregory Moore, Esq., Commissioner, Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference; Laz Alonso, Television & Film Actor; Justin Durant, NFL Player for the Detroit Lions; and Monica Newman McCluney, Director, Corporate Alliances, United Negro College Fund.

The $50,000 Tier 1 Grant winner of the 2012 Retool Your School campus improvement program is Lincoln University of Pennsylvania. The $25,000 Campus Pride Grant winner of the 2012 Retool Your School campus improvement program is Alabama A&M University. Benedict College will announce which project will benefit from the grant at a later date.
