With theft being the most prevalent form of property crime on college/university campuses, it's extremely important for students to take note of what they own and protect their belongings. Unfortunately, campus crimes are impossible to predict; however, there are definitely steps to take to ensure you don't become a victim of a campus crime. Did you know that the vast majority of motor vehicle theft in college and universities occurs on campus, and 80% of all campus crimes occurring at colleges and universities in the U.S. are property crimes? Benedict Police would like to remind students of several tips that can protect your property while in school:

Tips for Students

  • Make sure all electronics and other high value equipment is registered with your dorm director
  • Tour the campus during the day to familiarize yourself with the facilities
  • Tell a friend or roommate where you're going before venturing out
  • Avoid leaving your electronics, school bag or other belongings unattended/unsecured in plain view in vehicles or in open areas
  • Report suspicious people or vehicles to campus police

  • Keep your keys out when walking to your vehicle, dorm or apartment
  • Lock all doors and windows when you're sleeping or away from your room
