The mission of the Office of Teacher Education is to prepare teacher candidates to serve as powers for good in schools and communities. To this end, the Office of Teacher Education is committed to creating and maintaining a connecting forum across academic departments and schools of the college to ensure a high quality, standards-based educational program for all candidates admitted to teacher education. The Office of Teacher Education is the coordinating unit for all teacher education programs at Benedict College. This office ensures that the curriculum meets the requirements and standards of state and national certifying and accrediting bodies, directs professional field experiences, coordinates the review of applicants for admission to teacher education and recommends graduates for certification. In addition, this unit is responsible for the development of school/college partnerships to support teacher education and assessment as well as for provision of follow up and support of program completers.
The Office of Teacher Education at Benedict College is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), 2010 Massachusetts Ave., NW, Suite 500, Washington, DC 20036; phone (202) 466-7496. This accreditation covers initial teacher preparation programs. NCATE is recognized by the United States Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation to accredit programs for the preparation of teachers and other professional school personnel.
