On Saturday, January 14, 2017, members of the Columbia Tree and Appearance Commission completed the second phase of the tree planting along Read Street Extension in front of the Benedict College's Charlie W. Johnson football stadium.  Assisted by members of Benedict's facilities staff, they planted five tulip polar trees and three swamp white oaks on the school's campus.  These trees were privately funded by members of CTAC, and is a continuation of the line of nine trees planted last year that match the trees across the street planted by the City of Columbia.
