Columbia, SC -- September 1, 2016 -- Students returning to Benedict College for the 2016-17 academic year will notice improvements across campus -- from new facilities to remodeled dorms and apartments. Maintenance and landscaping crews have worked throughout the summer.

New Facilities


Benedict College Television (BCTV) and radio station opened its state-of-the-art news and radio station features a TV studio, Radio studio, editing rooms, sound booth and office space. BCTV and BCT radio station will now be located above the Bookstore next to the Swinton Campus Center.

Eklipse is the name of Benedict’s new hair salon and barber shop will open its full-service barber shop, beauty salon and nails boutique that opened in August 2016. The hair salon and barber shop is located on the 2nd floor of the Swinton Campus Center.

Residence Halls Get Dramatic Facelift

“Students are at the center of everything we do,” said Dr. David H. Swinton, President and CEO of Benedict College. “So we wanted to focus on improving the areas where they live. We look forward to welcoming our students back in our new and improved College.”

bc_news_20160901_campus_improvements002 New roofing was been replaced at the following locations Courtyard West - an off campus upperclassmen apartment complex, FAH, Fitness Center. Room air conditioning units and heating have been improved, and every shower stall has been rebuilt with new foundations, plumbing, showerheads, walls and ceilings. Finally, every dorm room was repainted.

Mather Hall, the largest female dormitory, will now have a full-service laundry room with new washers, dryers, folding and seating area. In addition, English Meadows and Bentley Court received new living and dining room sets.

In addition, the College’s has added new chillers, cooling towers and boilers, which provide more efficient cooling and heating to the buildings on campus. Also, the College has purchased a thermal machine to eradicate bedbugs with a 24 hour period. The dorms are scheduled to be up-fitted with specialty electrical outlets this Fall Semester 2016 to accommodate this equipment.

A New Look and Sound for Marching Band of Distinction


Benedict College Marching Band of Distinction will have new instruments and a full set of newly designed uniforms with a sleek, reinvented image. The instruments and uniforms will be debuted at the Palmetto Capital City Classic opening home game with BC Tigers vs Livingstone Blue Bears at 5 p.m. on September 3, 2016 at the Charlie W. Johnson Stadium.

New Services at the Post Office

The College post office has new machines and systems in place that will notify students via email of packages delivered to the mailroom. Electronic signature pads and new experienced staff will provide customer service and quicker response times for post office needs.

College New Book Store Hours

The new college bookstore hours will be Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The bookstore will open its concession stand at all football home games.

New Email Addresses

Over the summer, the Office of Information Technology upgraded the college’s email system from GroupWise to Microsoft Outlook. All faculty, staff and students will receive new email addresses.
