bc_2016_faculty_johnson_henry_wade_0629COLUMBIA, SC -- June 29, 2016 -- Mr. Henry Wade Johnson has been appointed the new director of bands at Benedict College announced today (June 29).

Prior to this appointment, Mr. Johnson, was the assistant professor of music and assistant director of bands at Savannah State University. Mr. Johnson will take over the position in July, formerly held by the late Mr. Herman Jones. Mr. Jones led the Benedict College Marching Band of Distinction for ten years. Before preparing to go on a sabbatical leave to study for his doctorate degree at Temple University, the late Mr. Jones recommend Mr. Johnson for this position.

Swinton, President and CEO of Benedict College. “We look forward to his arrival and especially the new energy he will bring to Benedict Marching Band and other ensembles he will conduct.”

Mr. Johnson has over 20 years of experience teaching music and leading young people in various band and musical programs at the high school and college levels. Prior to his position at Savannah State University, Mr. Johnson was Director of Bands at Lincoln University from 2006 to 2015, Director of Bands/ Assistant Professor at Delaware State University from 2004 to 2005, Assistant Professor and Director of Jazz Studies at South Carolina State University from 1997 to 2002, and Director of Bands at Livingstone College from 1990 to 1997.

He received his Masters of Education in instrumental and jazz from Vander Cook College of Music, Chicago, IL, Masters of Education in secondary counseling and his Bachelor’s Degree in instrumental music from South Carolina State University, Orangeburg, SC.

Mr. Johnson has performed professional with musicians and performers from a diverse group of genres that include Lou Rawls, The Temptations, Frank Foster (Conductor and Lead Saxophonist of the Count Basie Orchestra), Joe Sample (keyboardist and founder of “The Jazz Crusaders”), Fred Wesley (former leader of the James Brown Band), Marvin Sapp, and Dorinda Clark Cole.

Mr. Johnson has received numerous awards including the Thomas A. Dorsey Competition Award, Conductors Ward, and was the First Inductee into South Carolina State University Jazz Hall of Fame.
