ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Benedict College women's team placed five finishers in the top 11 to repeat as SIAC Women's Cross Country champions, while the men's team finished second as Dessi Demlew won the event.

The Lady Tigers scored 29 points to easily outdistance second-place Albany State (64 points).

Jonnise Pierce, the reigning two-time individual champion in the women's 5K race, finished second, 24 seconds behind Claflin's Carrie Byrd, who won the race with a time of 20:25.41.

Jenella John finished fourth with a time of 20:49.40, while Mikarla Swann was right behind in fifth place at 21:07.54. Astacia Watkins was seventh with a time of 21:47.93 to round out Benedict's four All-Conference finishers. Ruddesha Strachan missed making All-Conference by one spot, coming in 11th with a time of 22.23.83.

Demlew broke away from the pack early and crossed the finish line with a time of 25:37.01, nearly 90 seconds ahead of second-place finisher Dahir Mohamed of Morehouse, the first of four consecutive Morehouse runners to cross the finish line. The Maroon Tigers won the men's championship with 23 points.

Benedict finished second with 89 points. Ediberto Crisanto finished eighth (27:59.44) to earn All-Conference honors.

Geovanni West (20th place, 30:26.18), Terrence Wheeler (26th, 31:05.12) and Andre Hare (33:16.11) rounded out Benedict's top five finishers.
