Columbia, SC -- July 15, 2014 -- Mrs. Dorothy Buckhanan Wilson of Milwaukee, Wisconsin will be sworn in as the 29th International President of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. during the 66th Biennial International Convention of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. in Charlotte, NC, July 12-18, 2014. The swearing-in ceremony will be held on Thursday, July 17, 2014.
Dr. David H. Swinton, President and CEO of Benedict College, will make a toast to the honoree during the event. "It is with great TIGER pride that I will be part of this event to celebrate a Benedict alumna who has without a doubt become a "Power for Good" in the world community," said Dr. Swinton. "Your focus and dedication as you serve as the 29th President of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. will surely make the world a better place."
As international president, Mrs. Buckhanan Wilson will serve a four-year term from 2014-2018. She will guide policy, develop programs, and set the leadership tone for Alpha Kappa Alpha, which was founded in 1908 at Howard University, and is the largest and oldest organization of primarily African-American college-educated women in the world. She comes to the position with 36 years of committed service to the 106 year old organization of over 265,000 members, and has the distinction of being the only member to serve four consecutive terms on its international board. She is the first Wisconsin resident to be elected to the position.
Professionally, Mrs. Buckhanan Wilson is a Senior Vice President at Goodwill Industries, with responsibility for a $25 million enterprise in southeastern Wisconsin and metropolitan Chicago, more than 60,000 people served and 400 employees. This makes her one of the most senior officials at the largest Goodwill affiliate in the world. Prior to her career at Goodwill, Mrs. Buckhanan Wilson was a Marketing Executive at S.C. Johnson Wax, where she became the first African American and one of the youngest women to be promoted to Brand Manager at the firm. She holds an MBA degree from Clark Atlanta University and a Bachelor's degree in business administration and economics from Benedict College. She graduated from both institutions with high honors.
For her outstanding sorority service, Mrs. Buckhanan Wilson has received proclamations and keys to over 20 cities as well as recognition as Soror of the Year (chapter and Central Region), Outstanding Chapter President (chapter and Central Region), Soror Through the Years, Outstanding Chapter Leadership, Spirit of AKA Award, AKA Volunteerism Award, Outstanding Undergraduate Soror (South Atlantic Region), and the Founders Volunteer Service Award (International). She will receive one of Alpha Kappa Alpha's highest honors for distinguished community service at the 66th International Convention - the Carey B. Preston Leadership Award.
Mrs. Buckhanan Wilson's civic involvement includes active membership in several other distinguished organizations, where she has also held leadership positions, including Top Ladies of Distinction, Inc. where she is a past national officer; the National Council of Negro Women, and The Links, Inc.
