Columbia, SC -- April 25, 2014 -- The Benedict College Spring Commencement Ceremony for the Class of 2014 will be held at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 10, 2014, at the Charlie W. Johnson Stadium located on Two Notch Road and Read Street in Columbia, South Carolina. Dr. Benjamin D. Snoddy will give the keynote address during the College's 144th Commencement Exercises.

Snoddy is currently serving as the Senior Pastor of Mount Mariah Baptist Church in Spartanburg, SC, where he has served for the past 37 years. A native of Wellford, SC, Dr. Snoddy is a 1969 graduate of Claflin University in Orangeburg, SC and a 1972 graduate of Morehouse School of Religion at the Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta, GA. He has also completed four quarters of Clinical Pastoral Education in the hospital and correctional settings respectively and one year of Advanced Pastoral Psychotherapy at the Spartanburg Area Mental Health Center. He did further study in the doctoral program at McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago, IL. In 1992, he was conferred the honorary Doctor of Divinity Degree from Morris College in Sumter, SC.

Dr. Snoddy has served as pastor of the Bushy Pond Baptist Church of Norway, SC and the Tabernacle Baptist Church of Blackville, SC. In addition, he has served as a Clinical Chaplain of the SC Department of Corrections for four years and Chairman of the Board of Commissioners for Spartanburg Technical College for seven years of his twelve-year tenure. In appreciation for Dr. Snoddy's commitment and visionary leadership, the Spartanburg Technical College Board of Commissioners named the college's boardroom in his honor, namely the "Dr. Benjamin D. Snoddy Boardroom." He also served as a member of the South Carolina State Technical and Comprehensive Education Board of Directors for ten years. He is the Emeritus Moderator of the Spartanburg County Baptist Association after 20 years of service. In 2013, Dr. Snoddy completed his fifth and final year as the 15th President of the Baptist Educational and Missionary Convention of South Carolina.

He is a member of the BB&T Advisory Board of Spartanburg County and a member of the AMIKids White Pines Board of Directors of Jonesville, SC. Dr. Snoddy is Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Boys and Girls Club of the Upstate and the Mount Moriah Foundation's Board of Directors. He is an adjunct instructor of the Interdenominational Theological Center Certificate in Theology Program hosted by the Spartanburg County Baptist Association. He is also an Assistant Dean of the National Baptist Congress of Christian Education, which is an affiliate of the National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc. Dr. Snoddy is a member of the Trustee Board of Benedict College of Columbia, SC.

Dr. Snoddy has received numerous honors and awards including inducted by his alma mater into the Claflin University's Hall of Fame. In November 2005, the Governor of South Carolina awarded him with the Order of the Palmetto, the highest civilian award given by the State of South Carolina. In March 2000, he received the Mamie Duckett Memorial Award from Benedict College, and he also received the Urban League's Whitney Young Humanitarian Award in November 2006 for outstanding community service. Dr. Snoody was inducted into the Martin Luther King, Jr. Board of Preachers at Morehouse College in Atlanta, GA.

Dr. Snoddy is married to the former Miss Sheila L. Harvin of Pinewood, SC. He is the father of two adult daughters and is the grandfather of one granddaughter.
