bc_events_founders_day_rally_20140322_clifford_a_jones_srColumbia, SC -- March 17, 2014 -- Rev. Dr. Clifford A. Jones, Sr., Senior Minister of Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, Charlotte, North Carolina, will be the featured speaker at the Benedict College Founder's Day Rally. The event will be held Saturday, March 22, 2014 at 11 a.m. in Antisdel Chapel, Benedict College. Music will be provided by the Benedict College Concert Choir. The program is free and open to the public.

The Founder's Day observance pays tribute to Benedict College's primary benefactor, Mrs. Bathsheba A. Benedict, a missionary and abolitionist who founded the originally named Benedict Institute in 1870, under the auspices of the American Baptist Home Mission Society. Though it is specifically set aside to honor the College's founder, Mrs. Benedict, it is also the day when donors collectively make financial contributions to the institution. The Founder's Day Rally is one of the most significant events of the calendar year at Benedict College, and is a high point of the institution's Annual Fund Campaign. This historical event will unite people from churches and religious organizations, alumni, and community to show philanthropic support for the institution. Additionally, it provides an opportunity for Benedict to recognize and show appreciation to individuals, churches, and organizations that have donated financial, moral, and spiritual support to the institution.

This year's speaker, Rev. Dr. Jones, is a philanthropic and faithful supporter of the Baptist mission. He led a delegation to form a solid partnership with the Winterveldt School in Mabopane, South Africa for Friendship Missionary Baptist Church to partner in the purchase and building of a fully equipped Christian educational center for grades Kindergarten through High School. He has organized and led numerous medical and religious mission teams of preachers, doctors, nurses, technicians, and teachers to provide needed healthcare, medical supplies, and educational training in Jamaica, Africa, and Guyana, South America for children and families struggling in poverty.

He is a strong supporter of senior citizen activities. In April 2001, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Senior Centers recognized Dr. Jones as a recipient of their Lifetime Achievement Award because of his contributions and leadership in making our community a better place to live, work, worship, and raise a family.

"The Baptist E&M Convention Family is looking forward to celebrating the 144th Founder's Day Rally and worship service," said Rev. D.L. Grant, Sr., Director of Church Relations at Benedict College. "Baptists that represent 72 Baptist Associations will gather along with their moderators and pastors to show support for Benedict College. The convention has set its goal at $528,476.00, a 15% increase over last year."

Dr. James B. Blassingame, who serves as president of the SC Baptist E&M Convention and on the Board of Trustees at Benedict College, has assisted Rev. Grant in encouraging the Baptist constituency to meet the challenge. Although the Founder's Day Rally is held on March 22, the drive continues through June 30, 2014.
