Benjamin Qualls formerly of Bronx, NY, graduated in the Class of 1956 with a BS Degree in Chemistry. He is presently a retired chemist residing in Columbia, SC. He is presently a member of the Joint Editorial Board on Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Waste Water. He is married to the former Talsa Thompson. They have one daughter and one son and one grandchild.
Civic & Community activities include: Honored by the Mayor of New York City for special work on legionnaire’s disease; former member of the U.S. Power Squadrons with a rank of Navigator, former member of New York Academy of Sciences, U.S. Marines 1950-53 Rank Corporal.
Awards and Honors: He is the recipient of the United Negro College Fund Outstanding Alumni Award, 2002, He received the Outstanding Service Award in 1993; Benedict College National Alumni Association’s Top Giver Award, 1990-91; and was awarded for his help in the recruitment of Benedict College Students in 1991.
Alumni Association Involvement: Former Association president, active member of the National Alumni Association for over 40 years; currently serving as a member of the Progressive Benedict College Alumni Club of Greater New York. During his membership, he has served on numerous committees to include: the committee to host the Benedict College Concert Choir in New York City, in which he raised over $9,000; co-chaired the Club’s Annual Giving Fund Raising Committee; chaired the Student Recruitment Committee; chaired the Long Term Planning Committee and developed the Club’s Annual Giving Installment Plan with a local bank. He chaired the Long Range Planning Committee of the National Alumni Association in which The College’s license plates were proposed and implemented.
