bc_naa-salmond_thelma01.jpgThelma Brooks Salmond of Columbia South Carolina is a Blackville, South Carolina native who graduated with a B.A. Degree in Elementary Education in 1954 and Master of Arts from SC State University. She did additional studies at the University of South Carolina and at Temple University. Thelma retired from Richland County School District One where she served as Readiness, First Grade, Special Needs and curriculum resource teacher. She was the first teacher from her school to be elected "Teacher of the Year".

She has extensive experience training individuals and working with groups (conducting seminars) in various aspects of personal development for delivery of quality products and services. Her experience included assignments involving participants throughout the US and in the Bahamas.

She is married to Jasper Salmond, her college sweetheart.

Civic & Community Activities: Member of First Calvary Baptist Church where she serves as a deaconess, and on the famed Madrigals Choir. She is a life member of the NAACP, the National Education Association, and the SC Education Association. Thelma is also an active member of the Ambassadors (Palmetto Health Foundation) and the SC Comprehensive Breast Center...Steps Against Breast Cancer. She has the distinction of serving as Honorary Spokesperson for STORY (Sisters Tell Others and Revive Yourself)... Story is a research study to find out if a group by telephone is better than other support in helping African American women with breast cancer deal with treatment and side effects. She is a member of Gamma Nu Omega chapter of AKA Sorority, the Columbia Music Festival Association Board and the Eboni Dance Theatre Board. Thelma was honored with her husband Jasper in the 2005 March of Dimes African American Achievement Award.

Alumni Association Involvement: A Life Member of the Benedict College National Alumni Association, a member of the Benedict College Columbia Alumni Club #2; three terms as National Co-Chair of The Benedict College Annual Giving Campaign, where she has assisted in raising more than $1.5M for this three year period; received the Alumni Association's Top Honors, the Lula J. Gambrell Award; National Membership chair, Resolution Committee Chair, participant of Career Day Activities, Chair Special Fund Raising Committee BC Alumni Club #2 and is listed among the top ten in Annual Giving.
