A native South Carolinian (Born in Hopkins) grew up in Columbia, attended the public schools and was a 1949 graduate of Booker T. Washington High School. She is a 1960 graduate of Benedict with a BA degree in French and English. Further studies were done at the University of Nevada and the University of South Carolina.

After having taught for eight years at W: A. Perry Junior High School, she made a career change and entered the field of social work. She was employed briefly with Planned Parenthood as an outreach supervisor. After leaving Planned Parenthood, she enjoyed a fulfilling career with the SC Department of Social Services as an Adoption Specialist in the State Office.

She has volunteered for: CongareeGirl Scout Council community evaluation task force, member; Congaree Girl Scout Council Board Member; Secretary, Nominating Committee Chair; Congaree Girl Scout Council Women of Distinction Committee member; National volunteer for Girl Scouts USA; Voting precinct worker, Burton Heights-Standish Acres Neighborhood Organization Historian.

Her Church and Organizations involvement includes: Elder, Ladson Presbyterian Church, (U.S.A.); Past Moderator and Historian of Ladson Presbyterian Women (LPW); Chair, Ladson anniversaries and LPW Women Day observances; Commissioner to Presbyterian Church, (USA)General Assembly in 1998; Served on Trinity Presbytery Council, Camp Fellowship Committee, Family and Single Adult ministry and the Synod Planning Team for the 2004 Gathering for Presbyterian Women; Columbia Alumnae Chapter, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.; NAACP Wisteria Garden Club, Historic Columbia, Columbia Green Family.

She is married to James and they have two daughters: Brenda L. Hazzard & Constance L. Harris; four grandchildren: Eurydice H. Jines, Sebastian Hazzard, Charles Harris, III and Tinsley Rose Harris.

Her hobbies and interests includes: gardening, traveling, needlecraft and reading histories.
