Benedict College launches 2006 voter empowerment initiative: Congressmen Clyburn and Butterfield to speak at rally

[Columbia, S.C.] On tomorrow, Thursday, October 26th, the Benedict College Student Empowerment Committee and CHANGE, a student political organization, will co-sponsor its first in a series of "Get Out To Vote Rally."

 

            The 2006 Student Voter Empowerment Initiative is designed to engage students in the democratic process, which includes providing opportunities for students to register to vote; providing educational opportunities for students to learn about candidates and respective issues; and ultimately motivating students to vote in upcoming elections.  To date Benedict College has registered 458 new student voters using the 1600 Harden Street address.

 

The following activities are scheduled for the voter empowerment initiative:

 

  • On October 26th, Benedict´s political science student organization, CHANGE will host a "get out to-vote" rally at 11:00 a.m. in Antisdel Chapel with Congressman Jim Clyburn, S.C. 6th Congressional District, and N.C. Congressman G.K. Butterfield as speakers.

 

  • On November 2nd, an All College Assembly will be held at 11:00 a.m. in the HRC Arena (gym) to highlight representatives and political platforms from both Democratic and Republican Parties with keynote speakers Mrs. Kelly Adams and Mr. Henry White respectively.

 

On Election Day, November 7th, a number of strategies will be implemented to motivate students to vote, including an 11:40 a.m. parade of students around the inner circle of the campus led by drum line band members, cheerleaders, SGA Officers, campus leaders, athletes, and candidates, etc.
