Upward Bound Program

The Upward Bound project is a federally funded "College Prep" program administered by the U.S. Department of Education to provide 75 students from six target schools in the Richland, Lexington, and Fairfield counties with academic, career awareness, counseling and cultural enrichment services. The program identifies first-generation college students with academic potential from low-income families. The objective is to motivate these students academically and personally to complete high school and pursue some form of post-secondary education.

The program is year round with activities and services that span three components. The Academic Year Component consists of Saturday sessions and weekly tutorials that provide instruction in science, English, mathematics, standardized test preparation and computer technology. The Summer Residential Component allows participants to experience a sample of college life by allowing them to live in dormitories, eat in campus dining facilities, and attend classes and activities that will prepare them for the upcoming year. Similarly, the Bridge Component is designed to give Upward Bound participants a head start in their college careers. Bridge is designed to assists participants who have successfully graduated from high school with the transition to college. The students enroll in courses for college credit during the summer prior to their first semester and are instructed in time management and other college related issues.

The program has a curriculum designed to develop competencies in basic academic areas. Incorporated in the program are such skill-building activities as creative thinking, effective expression, and stressing positive attitudes toward learning needed for postsecondary education success. The program offers survival skills seminars, comprehensive academic, career and personal counseling services, recreation, and cultural enrichment activities. These are just some activities used to enhance the students' chances of success in postsecondary education.
