Workshop Series 2008
"Lest We Forget" (Slides)

Goal 1. Model exemplary educational practices for African American children via collaboration with public schools, colleges, and universities.
Goal 2. Conduct individual and collaborative cutting-edge research that enables and advances innovative and effective instructional programs, professional practices, and public policy.
Goal 3. Create and maintain a clearinghouse on information, resources, literature, and research relating to the education of African American children.
Rationale
There is compelling, pervasive, and persistent evidence that the education process is not working for many African American students throughout the state and the nation.
Nearly half (42.2%) of the enrollment in S.C.'s schools are African American students.
One of the biggest challenges faced by teacher educators is the effective education of nonwhite students.
The achievement gap between Black and White students is a pressing educational issue.
South Carolina and the nation cannot achieve educational excellence unless all children have the opportunity for success.
While the reasons for the achievement gap are complex, the proposed Center will focus on the role that teacher education programs can play in addressing the issue.
There is a paucity of well-designed research studies on educating African American children. |
